By Shaykh Muqbil ibn Hadi al-Wadi O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was for those before you 1-so perhaps you will become mindful (of Allah). Surah al-Baqarah: 183 The Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ stated: مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيْمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهَ "Whoever fasts Ramadan with faith and seeking a reward, his previous sins will be forgiven."
